Alloy 416 is a martensitic, free-machining chromium steel alloy, widely recognized as the first free-machining stainless steel. It offers the highest machinability among stainless steels (approx. 85% of free-machining carbon steel). While not as corrosion-resistant as austenitic grades, it provides good resistance to natural food acids, water, and atmospheric conditions. It is heat-treatable to achieve high strength and hardness, making it ideal for precision machining applications such as shafts, bolts, and gears.
